Key Benefits

This project will provide several significant benefits to both County Durham and the rest of the UK.

Local Benefits

  • Payment of business rates to Durham County Council over the lifetime of the project, providing valuable revenue to help the council deliver vital public services.
  • Provide a financial contribution to a local community fund or project.
  • Delivers a Biodiversity Net Gain on site of at least 10% by the planting of new native trees and hedgerows.
  • Approximately 25 FTE jobs created during the construction stage.

National Benefits

  • Battery storage will play a key role in helping the UK Government reach their target of net zero carbon emissions by 2050, 100% clean energy by 2030 and Durham’s commitment to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2045.
  • Will enhance UK energy security and system resilience, ensuring there is sufficient capacity available to meet periods of peak electricity demand, reducing dependence on imported energy from overseas.
  • Battery storage helps balance variable electricity demand with intermittent supply to enable the addition of more renewable generation to our energy system, supporting lower emissions, lower costs and lower energy prices over the medium to long term, helping to reduce the cost of living pressures.
  • Battery Storage is a key part of the net-zero transition, helping to tackle climate change which is effecting us all.
